How to organize screenshots on Android automatically

A free, private way to sort OTPs, receipts and tickets into folders, using text recognition that runs on your phone.

The short answer: Android has no setting that sorts screenshots into folders for you. To do it automatically, use an app that reads the text in each new screenshot and moves the file by rules. ShotSort is a free Android app that does this on your phone, with no account and no upload. It needs Android 10 or newer.

Can Android sort screenshots automatically on its own?

Not today. Your phone saves every screenshot into a “Screenshots” album and stops there. Gallery apps and Google Photos can group them by date, and search can sometimes find words inside an image, but nothing moves a receipt into a Receipts folder because it is a receipt.

Ways people try to organize screenshots

  • Move them by hand. It works for about a week, then the folder fills up again.
  • Use a file manager. Good for a one-off clean-up. It takes the same effort every time.
  • Search in Google Photos. Handy for finding one screenshot, but it doesn't move or tidy anything.
  • Use an automation app such as Tasker. It can move files, but you build every rule yourself, and reading the text inside an image is the hard part.
  • Use an app that reads the text and sorts for you. This is what ShotSort does: it reads each screenshot on your phone and files it by rules.

How to organize screenshots with ShotSort, step by step

  1. 1

    Pick two folders

Open ShotSort and choose the folder where your screenshots are saved, and the folder where sorted screenshots should go.

  2. 2

    Turn on monitoring

Switch on screenshot monitoring. A small notification shows while ShotSort is watching for new screenshots.

  3. 3

    Take screenshots as usual

ShotSort reads each new screenshot with on-device text recognition (OCR) and moves it into the matching folder within seconds.

You can also sort the screenshots you already have. One tap sorts the backlog, with a progress bar and an estimate of the time left.

What ShotSort sorts out of the box

  • OTPs and verification codes
  • Receipts and payments
  • Tickets and travel bookings
  • Addresses
  • Code snippets
  • Chats and conversations

Anything that doesn't match goes into a Misc folder, and the app suggests keywords for new rules. To sort something specific, add a rule with a name and a few keywords. A screenshot matches if its text contains any keyword, and you can test the rule on sample text before saving it.

Is it private?

Text recognition and sorting happen on your device. Your screenshots, the words in them and your rules are never uploaded. The free version shows ads from Google, so the app uses the internet for ads and for the optional purchase. Where the law requires it, a consent form is shown first. See the privacy policy for details.

What it doesn't do yet

  • The built-in rules look for English words. Add your own keywords for other languages.
  • The app itself is in English for now.
  • A screenshot with no text, such as a photo of a view, goes to Misc.
  • It needs Android 10 or newer.
  • The free version has ads. A one-time purchase removes them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I organize screenshots on Android automatically?

Android has no built-in option, so use an app that reads the text in each new screenshot and moves it into a folder by rules. ShotSort does this on your phone: choose a screenshots folder and an output folder, turn on monitoring, and take screenshots as usual.

Does ShotSort upload my screenshots?

No. Text recognition and sorting happen on your device. Your screenshots, their text and your rules are never uploaded. The internet is used only to show ads and for the optional purchase.

Is ShotSort free?

Yes. Every feature is free. The free version shows ads, and an optional one-time purchase removes them. There is no subscription.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up or sign-in.

Can I find a screenshot by the words inside it?

Yes. Search looks through the text of the screenshots ShotSort has sorted.

Can I undo a move?

Yes. Tap Undo on the item in Recent Activity on the dashboard.

Which Android versions does ShotSort support?

Android 10 and newer.

Does it work in languages other than English?

It reads Latin-script text and Hindi and Marathi. The built-in rules look for English words, so add your own keywords for other languages. The app itself is in English for now.
